This page will suggest general requirements for enrollment at CoYOTe AtTeNTiON, but individual courses may have their own requirements which are linked below for reference.

General Safety

Required Safety Items

  • Fire extinguisher - You need an ABC dry chemical fire extinguisher with documented monthly visual inspections (pressure gauge still at full, no dents or other physical damage, and an unexpired certification tag), a professional certification tag within the last year, and within an unobstructed 25 foot radius of the student (no doors or furniture blocking access).
  • Smoke detector - You must have a smoke detector approved for either residential or office use installed and provide documentation of monthly tests (take the smoke detector off the wall and check that either its manufacture date is within the last 5 years or that its expiration date has not passed, ensure the smoke detector is clean with a duster, ensure the battery is good, and press the self test button). Ideally this should be a networked model so that when any alarm goes off they all go off. If you live somewhere you cannot inspect the fire alarms, you must provide a fire alarm which you can inspect or a copy of your rental agreement saying that you cannot have your own fire alarm.
  • Battery operated weather radio - Although most phones support wireless emergency alerts, the implementation varies wildly and can often be disabled leaving you vulnerable. Plus, too many people are addicted to their phones and may not have enough charge when they need it. You will be required to provide documentation that you have checked the battery and tested the device at least once every 3 months. If using a cellphone it may help to add a weather app so that you can get alerts over the internet even in difficult areas.
  • Two flashlights with extra batteries - Although your phone may work in an emergency it is best to keep a dedicated flashlight so that you save your phone battery for other emergency uses. Your flashlight batteries should be from a reputable brand like Energizer or Duracell as these brands print expiration dates on the individual batteries. Ensure that the flashlight works at least monthly as well as checking batteries for expiration or corrosion.
  • Two emergency preparedness backpacks - We require two emergency preparedness bags (backpack preferred but a plastic gallon bag will suffice) because the emergency bag should be immediately accessible so that the student does not have to risk their life getting the emergency bag no matter how they have to evacuate.

Situationally Dependent Safety Items

  • Carbon monoxide detector - Although many smoke detectors are sold as combination units, they will often not sound without a fire. You may pass this requirement by either certifying that you have no combustion in the building (candles, fireplaces, gas furnace or water heater, gas dryer, or gas cooktop) or that you have a dedicated carbon monoxide alarm that has been tested with its self-test button and inspected for expiration at least monthly.
  • Fire ladder - For multi-story buildings you should have a fire ladder and know how to use it. As egress requirements are governed by local building codes this will not be verified.
